My Students
Math can be challenging for students when they do not have a strong number sense. In first grade, my students are learning math objectives that will build a foundation for understanding numbers.
Many of my students need math resources that will help them develop number sense.
My students are beginning to learn addition, subtraction, skip counting, patterns, money, and fact families.
Our school community is located in a high poverty, urban setting. At our school, approximately 96 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches. We are in our third year as a turn around school and our students are already making remarkable progress. My students are dedicated and excited about their learning.
My Project
The math resources I have requested will help my students easily manipulate numbers during direct instruction. The magnetic numbers will allow my students to easily arrange them from least to greatest, add, subtract, skip count, etc. The magnetic counters will allow my students to represent numbers and demonstrate patterns. Also, the magnetic money will allow my students to understand what each coin looks like and how much it is worth. In addition, the 1-100 pocket chart with removable numbers, will allow my students to understand 10 more and 10 less, skip counting, counting up, and counting down. All of these skills are covered daily during calendar math. Therefore, each resource will be used every day.
These math resources will allow my students to have a hands-on approach to math.
My students are eager to learn and soak up new information. They will be excited to have resources that allow them to understand math!
