Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As the title of the famous book says, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, but I haven't found it anywhere near my school.
How does one study plants when outside there is nothing but concrete and pavement? You build an indoor greenhouse.
What are we going to plant?
When are we starting? These are some of the questions that my students have been asking me ever since I let them know our next unit is on plants. They can't wait to get their hands dirty.
Our school is located on the water's edge. It is a small Title I high school located in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn. We are located in "Asthma Alley," and sandwiched between two major urban bridges - The Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.
My Project
All of my students are English Language Learners (ELL). They come from every part of the globe seeking a new life of opportunity and freedom here in the United States. They come with the hope that education will allow them to meet their full potential.
Many of my students have a close relationship with nature and growing plants in the homelands. This project will allow them to build a small desktop greenhouse to create the proper environment for plant growth. With the resources like PVC pipes and fittings, grow lights and fixtures, and vinyl sheets, my students will have the opportunity to study plants through hands-on learning experiences.
Students enjoy learning science since it offers educational opportunities that they create on their own.
Unfortunately, conducting science experiments and hands-on activities is expensive, but I believe that are essential to truly understand science.
With you help, we can make science meaningful and memorable.
Thank you for supporting public education in New York City.
