This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Approximately 92% of the students that I teach are from families that live at or below the poverty line in Baton Rouge, La. My classes are inclusion classes, meaning that I teach students that have one or more special needs. In order for the students to be successful, I need to be more creative in teaching my lessons. My students need hands-on activities and positive reinforcement throughout the lessons.
The majority of my students are 3 to 4 years behind in their reading and math abilities.
This does not stop their desire to learn new concepts. It just means that I need to approach topics using unique projects. This year, I am teaching a fabrication class. The students are to design, create, and build various items such as gifts for their guardians, themselves, and items to sell around school creating a small business. In this model, the students would save the money raised in three categories: 1. 1/3 of the money to buy needed material to create new items, 2. 1/3 of the money to fund long-range projects, and 3. 1/3 of the money to give to a researched charity.
My Project
Through grant writing and generous donations, I have been able to acquire various machines that my students can use to help them learn real-world work skills. We started with designs for our school's Christmas ornament. As we worked, we talked about circumference, ratio, visual center vs actual center, how the percent of power relates to the percent of speed needed. After about 30 minutes, one student said, "so this is why we need to learn math." Yes! Using these machines will allow me to support different teachers at my school. I am working with the 8th grade ELA teacher
to create covers for their poetry journals and the art teacher to create tessellated pictures and puzzles, and stencils to use in cyanotype prints.
These simple projects are igniting a spark in my students! They have started creating designs to engrave on wood and acrylic. They have made vinyl stickers for teachers' coffee cups and even helped design and make 40 keychains to give as favors for a birthday party. My virtual students were able to work with us to design the keychains.
It was beautiful to watch them work together. I watched a few students helping other students with the math! They decided that it would be better to work after school 2 days a week, moving the 3D printer and Silhouette machine outside, so my virtual students have a chance to come and work with them and the machines.
So, our little business has begun! We will use these supplies to create craft items that we can sell to parents, students, and teachers. The money raised will be divided into three categories: immediate supplies, large supple items, and a charity. The students voted to support St. Jude's Hospital.
