Building Math One Block at a Time

My students need a variety of building materials, such as Legos, magnetic blocks, and interlocking toys.

I teach kindergarten in a classroom where many of my students have not gone to preschool and are missing some of the basic pre-kindergarten experiences that other 5 year-olds have had. My class consists of 13 energetic Kindergartners from a variety of home and family structures. More than half of my students come from low income families and the majority of students are not white.

Before 2+2 and how many apples are on the tree now, children learn math through play, especially building and block play. During building students count, sort, pattern, measure, and develop other math skills naturally. Since many of the students in my classroom have no pre-school experience, they also have little building and block experience. When I came to this school 10 years ago, the building materials were old, tired, and worn out and we have not been able to get new materials in all the time I have been here. We have a wonderful set of unit blocks, but no other materials.

This grant will provide a variety of building materials to enrich the basic math experiences of my kindergarten students. These materials will allow them to build in a number of ways-stacking, interlocking, magnetically attracting, and snapping together. Not only will they gain valuable math experiences with these materials, but they will grow their small motor skills and expand their scientific knowledge base.

Your help will enable students who would not otherwise be able to afford expensive building materials develop their early math skills and fill in their pre-school gaps before moving on to first grade math.
