My Students

Do you remember your experience learning basic math? It used to be all about memorizing algorithms. Today it is about hands-on learning.

I teach kindergarten in a public school in Nevada.

I work in a high-poverty area where many students are learning English as their second language. Most, if not all, of the students in kindergarten have never been to preschool or had the opportunity to attend an academic daycare.

My Project

We are "B.U.I.L.D."ing our math muscles in kindergarten. This acronym represents the different opportunities students will have to solidify their math knowledge using the requested materials. The "B" stands for Buddy Games. Students will use the File Folder Games during this time. The "U" stands for Using Manipulatives. Working with hands-on materials help students understand abstract math problems, that is why I am requesting math links and hands-on center activities. The "I" stands for Independent Work. During this stations students read and create math-related books. I have requested Math Leveled Readers so students can read books about math at their level. The "L" stands for Learning About Numbers. Number sense is one of the most important standards in kindergarten. Lastly, the "D" stands for Doing Math. This is where students have an opportunity to practice the math concept that has been presented that day. All of the materials requested will be used during this math station time.
