My students need Counting Boxes and Number Sequencing Puzzles to improve their number sense. These items will help them build a strong number foundation to help them be successful in Math.
My students work best in small groups and through exploration with items they can touch.
We have a class of 20 5 years olds.
We are a Transitional Kindergarten class, and it is only the second year of this grade level in our district. My students are really excited about learning, and love to play games. Our classroom is extremely diverse and we have a large variety of learning levels. Some students are advanced, while the majority of the students are struggling with basic concepts such as number sense.
My Project
Our class would use the resources such as Counting Boxes and Number Sequencing Puzzles in small group center time to reinforce concepts that have been taught and reviewed in the classroom. Students will be able to better understand the concept of one to one correspondence with these materials that catch their attention. The materials I choose could be used repeatedly and without too much adult supervision. It would be an easy way for me to quickly assess students as well as give me much needed time to work with students on an individual basis.
Number sense is a good predictor for future success in mathematics, and I have found number sense to be a struggle with my class this year.
To help reinforce this concept I am asking for materials that will give students practice putting numbers in order as well as games where students will practice one to one correspondence. I think using these materials in small groups and with pairs will help build a strong Math foundation that will boost my students confidence to try other Math concepts.
