Building Materials for Exciting Solar Powered Engineering Projects

Help me give my students the materials they need to design and build a solar oven and other projects.

My Students

My students come from a variety of backgrounds with about half coming from low-income homes. Many of my students come from military families stationed nearby. My students are always eager to learn and take every opportunity to better themselves. Their desire to learn inspires me to do whatever I can to provide them the resources they need to be successful.

Activities that inspire students to solve real problems help to create leaders that are prepared to solve problems.

Most of my class is based on projects. My students love to explore, create, and learn from their experiences.

My Project

These materials will allow my students to design and build a solar oven. It will also give us much needed storage for our VEX Robotics kits. We will use parts off the flashlights to create a foot insole that will charge devices by walking.

This project will allow my students to experience the power of solar energy.

Using the engineering design process, my students will design and build an oven using cardboard, plexi glass, insulation, and black duct tape. Then they will monitor and record the temperature of the ovens. Once the ovens reach the desired temperature they will bake chocolate chip cookies. If their oven doesn't reach the appropriate temperature, they will revisit their design.
