I have always had a passion for reading and the skills that are associated with it. When I found out that I had landed my dream job of being an ELA teacher, I knew that I wanted these same passions to reflect in my students. I want to build a classroom that is full of the love of literature.
I had the pleasure of student teaching at the same school I was offered a job at.
Because I have already had some experience in the school, I have met many of the students that will be in my own third grade classroom this coming year. These students are smart, sweet, and striving to be the best that they can be. However, achieving that feat is difficult when you lack many of the needed resources. Over 80% of the students at my school receive free or reduced lunch. It is amazing how many times a day these children crave food, attention, and knowledge. I hope to provide them with those essentials during their time in my classroom.
My Project
I am requesting materials that will expand the possibilities of my reading center. To instill the love and understanding of reading in my students, I must first provide them with relevant and engaging materials. I plan to use the iPad for checking out classroom library books and downloading center games/apps to improve literacy skills. The beanbags will provide students with a comfortable and inviting place to read in our classroom library. The bingo games and paired passages provide students with a fun way to better their understanding of reading genres, comprehension, comparing and contrasting, and fluency. All of these skills are imperative for building competent readers, and these materials will help us achieve that goal!
Beginning this profession, I am equipped only with the love I have for my students and the goals I hope to achieve for them.
I could not accomplish this project financially without the help of people like you. Books open a world to students living in poverty that they may never get to experience for themselves. They cannot enter that world without the literacy skills that these items will help them build.
