Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been teaching kindergarten for 8 years in a high-need community. The same community I grew up in. Most of the students in my school come from low-income families and are faced with drugs and violence on the streets.
My 4 and 5 year-olds are very eager and active children that sometimes get bored with the district mandated reading program. Sadly, a few children come into school with little motivation to learn. So I try to engage their interest by integrating theater arts into the core literature we read. We act out stories and poems to bring the text to live. Students go to the classroom library area to play out stories using some old plush toys and paper bag puppets we store in a cardboard box.
My students would be so excited about acting out stories using a children's theater stage with curtains and a variety of puppets. It would make them feel important and increase their self-esteem. Their language and learning will flourish as they engage in this dramatic play.
Your help will ensure that my students develop important social and storytelling skills that will enable them to succeed in the future. They are the future of our community.
