I am an English teacher at a low-income, high-need high school. Though many of my students are brilliant, they lag significantly behind acceptable, national literacy levels.
Though we have an adequate supply of novels, a major method of increasing student literacy is by having them read books of their choice and interest.
I need a significant number of books of student interest to drive their literacy development. By improving the literacy of these high school students reading on a low-level, there is still hope that can reach college-ready levels.
