Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Although many people view English class as mind-numbing drills on grammar and punctuation, the heart of English is in the literature, and the goal of a good English class should be to help students love what they read.
My students are amazing.
Despite coming from high-need backgrounds, my students are interesting, dedicated, caring, and intelligent individuals. These qualities are rarely allowed to fully flourish, however, due to a lack of resources and the constant upheaval of our school district, not to mention the challenges that many face outside of their classroom lives.
My Project
In order to help my students develop a love of reading - and with this love of reading, an increased ability to read critically - I want to provide my students with a class library where they can find books that fit their reading level, engage their interest, and encourage reading outside of class time (a valuable quality, especially when it comes to life-long learning). I already have books ready for my students, generously donated by friends, family, and publishing companies, but no bookshelves! The bookshelves and filing cabinets will help students to easily access books and magazines and provide a simple way for students to find what they're interested in.
Many of my students have never experienced the thrill of being surrounded by books.
With these bookshelves and cabinets, it will be a small step toward creating a classroom where they are in an environment that constantly reinforces the importance of reading and helps students feel at home around books.
