Building Literacy Skills Using Scholastic Art Magazine
My students need access to Scholastic Art Magazine to deepen their understanding of various artists, media, and processes as well as build their literacy skills across disciplines.
My students are creative middle schoolers who are interested in exploring the world of art. Students manipulate a variety of media in our classroom as they find a variety of solutions to challenges they approach with visual answers. Our school is a great place for learning and I am proud of the accomplishments of our students, which include recognition at local, state, and national competitions. In addition to achieving this success, my students are interested in giving back to the community through a variety of charitable activities.
My Project
Students in my classroom are on a constant search to create new meaning in their work through the manipulation of media. Part of knowing what and how to do these things is researching what has been done in the past. Having resources that are both age-appropriate and reliable for my classroom, which does not have a text book, is something I value and Scholastic Art Magazine can provide.
Scholastic Art Magazine helps build literacy skills and allows a portal for my students to investigate the creative processes, careers, and motivations behind successful artists as well as find new ways to apply concepts to their own development of unique work.
In addition to allowing students the opportunity to view works from both past and present artists, Scholastic Art Magazine invites students to be creative with their skills through an interactive website that is accessible to subscribers. The website gives additional resources like video tutorials and guided learning activities that can help students push their understanding of art even further.
Literacy skills are important in every classroom and having a tool like Scholastic Art Magazine in my classroom allows students to build on their reading, writing, and ability to make meaning of the media they see. Most important to building these skills is having engaging content that is both student-centered and relevant to best-practices in education. This project allows me to bring in a much-needed resource and helps me work with my students on connecting Visual Arts to other content areas through the cross-curricular ties Scholastic Art Magazine creates between art and History, Language, Culture, and everyday life.
