Building Literacy Skills Using Computer Science With Bee Bot Robots

Help me give my students Bee Bots to be used in the library for literacy lessons such as story sequencing, story retelling, story development, and much more. Using Bee Bots in literacy will provide computer literacy skills, too.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Bee Bot, a small robot in the shape of a bee, requires simple coding and computational thinking that engages young students and can be used in the library with literacy lessons. Creating stories, sequencing, story retell, vocabulary development, genre identity are a few of the many literacy activities that can be done with Bee Bots.

My goals for this library project are to combine literacy lessons and computer science standards using Bee Bots, in an exciting way for students to develop literacy standards.

The Bee Bot has four directional buttons to move forward, back, etc. and three command buttons, go, stop, and pause and is placed on a grid mat. Literacy elements can be place in different areas on the grid mat and students will be challenged to code the Bee Bot to follow a correct sequence for various tasks, such as the sequence of a story, or match a vocabulary word to its meaning. It takes seconds to code the Bee Bots and get them moving. With six Bee Bots, six different learning scenarios can be placed around the room on different mats and students can move to different challenges.

The students loved STEM challenges that were offered to them in the library this year. Providing collaborative robot challenges for literacy skills will bring them to a new level of learning and challenges with books that are shared with them. Incorporating computer science skills with literacy skills will definitely bring excitement to the learning environment and offer students an engaging way to learn important skills in both areas.
