Building Literacy Skills in Pre-K for English Language Learners
Help me give my students storytelling puppets, magnetic alphabet, numbers and animals in order to help them use various materials to retell and create their own stories.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom consists of 20 preschoolers, several of whom have special needs. The majority of my students are English Language Learners with various backgrounds.
I have a diverse group of students who are curious learners and love to share their experiences.
While many of my students are new to the country, this is also their first time in a school setting. Please help me provide them with the resources and opportunities to further their experiences and expand their knowledge to help them feel and become successful.
My Project
Most of my students are English Language Learners and learn best with visuals. We have read, watched videos and even physically acted out some classic fairytales and stories. Now, I want to provide my students with the opportunity to use puppets to retell and even create their own version of the stories.
Using a puppet to tell a story will bring my students' stories to life and spark their imagination as they discover the joy of literature and learning.
While using these materials, the children will be able to act out the scenes, repeat their favorite lines as well as create the setting for each story. Having these physical visuals (puppets and natural objects) will help the students build upon their literacy skills by learning and using new vocabulary as well as work on their social skills by sharing, talking and acting out scenes with their classmates and friends.
