Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at Title I school in Queens, New York where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our school serves students in grades 6-8 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers, and a safe learning environment. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.

My students don't wear their struggles on them, they walk into class every day ready and eager to learn with a smile on their face.

Even though they have struggled academically most of their lives because of their various disabilities. As a Special Education Teacher, I see the learning struggles my students have to overcome. I also serve a very high percentage of ELL (English Language Learner) students. Many of my students receive services for English as a Second Language, in addition to their disability.

With all these obstacles set before them, not having access to helpful resources should not be one of them.

My Project

All students learn the same curriculum and take the same assessments, yet not everyone learns this material in the same way. The materials being requested will provide students with differentiated materials to ensure each student is receiving equal educational opportunities.

"The moment you doubt whether you can FLY, you cease forever to be able to do it" -Peter Pan

By providing my students with these differentiated materials, you are giving them confidence. Confidence that they can take the lead in their own education because they have the resources necessary to do so. Imagine looking at a book and not being able to understand the purpose of the reading, or being overwhelmed by the words you have read. Each book provides not only the information they need, but visual aids and simulations to ensure deeper enduring and understanding. My hope is that these resources will promote not only an interest in Science but reinforce a positive relationship with literacy.
