Building Literacy and Language at School and at Home
My students need reading materials in English and Spanish so that they can build their literacy skills at school and at home with their parents! We need Green Light Readers, Favorites Grades 2-3 Spanish.
What is it like trying to navigate school in English when it's not your first language and no one at home can help? As an itinerant English as Second Language teacher at three Title I elementary schools in South Carolina, I see this struggle firsthand as my students who are not yet proficient in English tackle challenges each day.
Many of my students speak very little English at all.
87% of my students are free lunch and come from homes where making ends meet is a daily struggle. But, these children are motivated and eager to learn and their parents want to help! Yet, because many of their parents are also limited English proficient, they struggle to help build their children's literacy skills in English at home. I want to put texts and materials into these students' hands that they can use at school and at home because literacy is literacy in ANY language!
My Project
Students who read at home and who have parents who are involved in their learning are much more successful in school! These bilingual materials will give my ESL students the opportunity to read and discuss literature and informational texts at school with their peers and at home with their parents, creating the scaffold they need to reach their true potential.
The parents of my ESL students want to help their children learn, but because they are often limited in English themselves, they struggle to do so.
Using bilingual materials with students creates a much-needed bridge between school and home for these students.
