Building Literacy And Enjoyment For Second Language Learners

My students need the novel The Hunger Games, the corresponding educational packets and lesson plans, and the movie.

My Students

My students are all English Language Learners and English is most often their second or third language. For these students, reading is not done regularly, let alone done for enjoyment. The goal for my students this year is to expand their vocabulary as well as build their reading and writing skills.

In my classroom I have a total of 80 students I see throughout the day.

These students have come from South America, Mexico, Vietnam, Laos, China, Ukraine, Russia and many other countries. These students speak some English, but not often with the correct language abilities as a native speaker would have. Writing and reading in English is often a challenge for these students and I use basic grammar and syntax lessons on a daily basis. Most of the students do not read on their own because the lack the skills needed or they see reading as a negative activity due to the challenge it presents. The school has approximately 90% of the population receiving free or reduced lunch. There are 1700 students enrolled on campus and almost half require some type of English Language Learner service.

My Project

The goal of The Hunger Games unit is to excite students about reading outside of the classroom as well as within the classroom. Since the novel is considered to be high interest, many of the students have heard of it, but may feel overwhelmed reading it alone. The goal is to teach the students how to learn vocabulary while reading novels, how to look for themes within literature and how to use close reading strategies to improve comprehension of large pieces of fictional work. Students will work on projects connecting them to the theme, character traits, heroism, bravery, plot, tone, mood, setting and word choice.

This will show my students that their education and reading is an important asset for their futures.

Students will have access to novels which they would not normally have. Students will gain an appreciation for reading and maybe even develop the want to read for pleasure outside of the classroom as well as within, making them life long learners.
