Building Life Skills Through Kitchen and Costume Play

I teach an amazing group of young learners in a self-contained kindergarten/first grade classroom. Every day, my students work hard to build the foundational skills many others take for granted—like sharing, talking with peers, or simply pretending.
Dramatic play is more than fun, and it is essential for my students’ growth.
A play kitchen, costumes, pretend food, and a laundry center will transform our classroom into a space where my students can practice real-world routines, grow their imaginations, and build communication and life skills safely and joyfully.
Many of my students are nonverbal or limited in expressive language, but pretend play gives them a voice. These materials will create opportunities for connection, confidence, and independence that carry far beyond the classroom.
