Building Life Skills Through Financial Math

My Project

Money management skills are one of the important skills that high school students must master for their future life and career. With a hands-on money teaching kit, students are able to improve their cognitive learning of percentages, ratios, math concepts as well as money management skills. My high school students learn the majority of new information during school hours, communication at home with my students is limited due to language barriers, especially with immigrant parents who do not use English as their first language.

In my class everyone uses American Sign Language to communicate and learn.

Most of my deaf and deaf-blind students do not have a shared language with their hearing parents. As a result, unlike hearing students, my deaf and deaf -blind students do not have background knowledge related to money management when they come into my classroom. As such, my students love to learn using hands-on activities and better retain the information.

I will use the hand-on money teaching kit daily to teach my students how to calculate total price, exchange price after purchasing, discounted price, real price, and unit price through hands-on activities and role playing mock purchase interactions.

The hands-on money teaching kit will allow students to connect concepts of percentages, real price, discount price, and unit price. Additionally, the research indicates that students learn better and understand more when they engage in class activities using hands-on materials. Your donation to this project will allow my students to achieve academically and financially by building conceptual and world knowledge related to money management and will lead them to better experiences in the future.
