Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Learning to write and to hold writing implements is a big challenge for many kindergrtners. Making perfectly straight lines and curves without wavering can be daunting tasks. Art provides the opportunity to practice strokes used in writing while simultaneously building academic language.
My kindergarten students attend a Title I school in a low income community.
Most come from Spanish speaking homes, and for some kindergarten is their first exposure to an all-English learning environment. All students enjoy being creative and delving into different art media. This group of students is eager to explore the world in which they live and grow in their artistic abilities.
My Project
My students need tempera paint, construction paper, texture templates, paint brushes, and other art supplies to help in developing the strength in their hands needed to write and hold writing implements properly. In addition to working on fine motor skills, students will also explore the concepts of line, texture, and color which relate to science standards (e.g. 5 senses and how things feel, using color to describe objects, etc) and art frameworks (e.g. identify elements of art including line, color, shape, and texture). Through the use of art, not only will students gain artistic and scientific skills, but they will also build on language arts skills through the use of academic language and vocabulary when naming types of lines, learning and explaining how to mix colors, and using the names of art utensils.
I find great importance in giving students a creative outlet to showcase the skills that they have studied.
Through art and creative expression my students will build academic vocabulary and fine motor skills, and be allowed to investigate certain aspects of science.
