Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is composed of 55 fifth graders in a general education class, with students with IEP and ELL learners and special education students such as autism.

A typical day in my classroom looks active.

My students are engaged in learning activities that get them moving, talking to their peers, and asking great questions. You will not see a lot of worksheets in my classroom. My students are learning through hands-on experiences.

I teach in a Title I school.

My fifth-grade students come from very diverse families. I am excited to share that my school is a genuinely diverse community. Not only do students come from varying ethnic backgrounds and places, but the life experiences that they’ve had are incredibly unique. My scholars are creative, thoughtful and full of excitement!

My students are 9 and 10 year children that love coming to school. When school was closed in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic not only were the kids wanting to come back but we missed seeing their smiling faces every day.

My Project

As a staff, we continue to grow and learn with these students. Due to our location and population we face many challenges. Even with these challenges I love that my school is focused around social emotional learning and trying to equip our kids with skills to last a lifetime. Our students have intense reading and math programs with a huge emphasis on experiential learning opportunities.

Students will use nintendo switch, microbit, foil tape, lithium battery, alligator clip, tools, drawers andpencils and many more tools they need in order for them to have access to tech needed to be innovative creators and developers.

Using the electronics to build and code in a STEM lab using the nitendo switch to create coding games and using the materials such as the microbit to build and program their own game. Our goal is to introduce students students to STEM and the unending possibilities that technology has to offer. The STEM lab will be open to all students to build, explore, model, and just be plain curious about how things work. We hope to empower our students and introduce computer science to females.

While we are virtual learning, students can check out kits to tinker at home!

Exploring with our STEM resources, students will learn new skills such as programming, design thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students desperately need these skills to thrive in the 21st century. Please help me bring this into my classroom to encourage them to reach higher.
