My students need engaging and inviting center activities like instant learning centers and file folder games for math, language and phonemic awareness.
Gone away are the days of numerous worksheets and constant drill practice. Children today are learning through meaningful and engaging hands on activities. The ability to manipulate things provides my eager learners with the concrete examples they need to make their learning stick!
I teach in a low income, working class neighborhood in which many families lack the resources to help their children be successful.
My class population is 40% Hispanic and 60% African American and 80% of them are on the free or reduced lunch program. Despite the obstacles and challenges they fact at home, my students are motivated learners who are excited about coming to school.
They are eager children who start the year off like little sponges soaking up everything they can learn. However due to the budget cuts on education, my students are in great need of more resources to help supplement their core learning at school. My little kindergarteners come in, dependent on me as a teacher to meet their every need. My goal for them by the end of the year, is for them to be independent thinkers and learners. As their teacher, I hope to provide them with the necessary materials to help them achieve their goals.
My Project
According to The Partnership for 21st Century Skills, 21st readiness in students requires combining the traditional 3 R’s (Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic) with four C’s (Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication and Collaboration. My students will use the activities and centers requested to help practice new skills and work towards mastery of old skills. Students will be exposed to a wide range of literacy and math skills. While my students are in Discovery Centers, I am able to work with small groups. Often times my students successfully complete their work and are searching for more activities that they can complete. My students will use the file folder games as extension activities when they are finished with their center work. The file folder games will not only give my students an engaging activity to work on, but will also decrease down time and assist me in making sure every minute is utilized productively.
Donations to this project will allow my students to be actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.
The materials requested have all my students need to independently complete the tasks. Students will have opportunities to work on their communication, critical thinking, and collaborative skills with their peers. By becoming independent learners students will learn how to take ownership of their learning, and make successful steps to becoming a confident 21st century learner.
