FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Davis's classroom raised $400
This project is fully funded
I have been teaching first grade in an extremely low income area, for five years now. This year I have 17 wonderful children. Of those 17, only three are reading on grade level. One of the things that I try to teach my students is that reading is fun. I encourage them to read whenever they can. The problem is that they may not have books available to them at home for whatever the reason. The local library is close by, but if a parent is not willing to walk their child to the library, then the child can not take any books home to read. Every year, I give books as gifts to my students in December and in June. The year that their eyes lit up when they opened their gifts was the year that I knew I had got it right. An author that my class really enjoys is, Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss books like, Green Eggs and Ham and The Cat in the Hat, promote reading through rhyme. This helps my students who are struggling readers and my Spanish speaking students. Dr. Seuss books capture readers with the funny situations that the characters get themselves into along with the illustrations. What I would like is for every student in my class to have a Dr. Seuss book of their very own. Green Eggs and Ham, would be my first choice and, The Cat in the Hat, would be my second. I want my children to be able to pick up a book whether they are in my classroom or in their bedroom. I want them to develop a love for reading because reading is what will give them a solid foundation to build on later. The problem is that Dr. Seuss books are high in price. I would appreciate any help that I can get with getting these books into my student's hands. I want to give my students any and all the tools that they need to succeed and having books at home to read is one step closer to helping these children achieve their academic goals.
Thank you so kindly.
