Building Home Libraries for My Students...in Need of Books!

My students need books to create home libraries. A home library will help expose children to more literature and hopefully make reading more fun!

My Students

Looking back, did you have a home library or access to books outside of school? For my students the answer is no. For low income families the ratio of books to children is 1 book for every 300 children while moderate income families have a 12 books to 1 child ratio. Please help me close this gap!

I have an enthusiastic group of 21 students who come to school ready to learn.

They are creative, inquisitive and hard working. As they start to learn their phonics and how to put sounds together to make words, they begin to learn to read. This awesome discovery of books makes them love to tackle our classroom library in search of a great book. Our school is a K-8 Title I school located in a rural community that is comprised of many ethnic and cultural backgrounds such as Pacific Islander, Hawaiian and Filipino.

My Project

Having these books will allow my students to apply their reading skills that they have learned. They will be able to choose books that are of interest to them and at their reading level. My students will then practice reading these books independently or in a small group with support from a teacher. From here, they will be able to take these books home and add it to their home library. A home library is a crucial part of building reading skills in young children. It gives them access to books which for my students is mostly non-existent at home. A home library consisting of books that students are able to read can also connect them with family members who may not be able to read themselves. These young students will be sharing the love of reading with their families.

Donations to this project will change my classroom in ways that I can't even imagine.

It will provide students with books at their reading levels which will help them practice their reading skills at an appropriate pace. It will get them excited about reading and practicing because they know they will get to take this book home and add it to their home libraries. Home libraries will give my students access to books when they are not at school and allow them to read every night.
