Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am an Adapted Physical Education teacher that works with students from PK - 5th grade with Visual Impairments. I have missed them so much and am so excited to see them in person in the Fall!! They bring so much joy and laughter into our classes. My students love to move! In APE classes, they dance, do obstacle courses, and play sports, but they also have specific needs that cannot always be met by traditional equipment.
All students should have the opportunity to play sports and participate in PE.
Having access to appropriate equipment will help my students participate in Adapted PE, and also encourage them to stay active at home!
My Project
Students with disabilities are often overlooked during physical activities. Many might assume that these students are not able to do the same things as other students, but that simply isn't true. We just need to make a few adjustments to help them out. For my students with visual impairments, that means incorporating their other senses like sound and touch.
Many of my students were sedentary during distance learning and will need fun, motivating activities to help them move (figurative and literally) towards building a healthy, active lifestyle.
The pedometers will help my students track their steps during activities. We will be able to play Fitness Uno with the braille Uno cards. Yoga mats are not just great for fitness and yoga, but will also provide my students with a tactile cue of where to stand/sit while still maintaining social distancing. I have so many more ideas that will I know will engage my students, and I can't wait to share them.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
