Building “Hands-On” Math Learning Centers

Help me give my students tools that will assist our learners to grow mathematically as we put the learning directly in their hands.

My Students

Our sixth grade is comprised of 130 amazing students, many of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced-price lunch. Thriving in an ocean of opportunity, on last year's end of grade test, the shark team showed remarkable academic growth, regardless of demographics. In fact, several of our learners made grade level proficiency in Language Arts and Math for the first time in several years. We need your assistance as we swim toward the shore of academic success.

My Project

We are requesting your assistance to build “Hands-On” Math Learning Centers in our Math Classrooms. The tools requested will assist our learners to grow mathematically as we put the learning directly in their hands.

From hands-on equation balancing, to algebra tiles sets, to centers built with number line balancing manipulatives, and equation building blocks, our learners’ ability to bridge the achievement gap increases exponentially.

Additionally, this hands-on math approach incorporates the use of centers designed to allow our students to be taught in small groups based on their mathematical needs. This enables the teacher to focus on a small group of students as they solve mathematical problems. He or she is then able to observe and coach students based on where the student needs are and guide them in the right direction in their mathematical reasoning and problem solving.

These centers will include Math Games for Number and Operations and Algebraic Thinking and will provide students opportunities to interact with other students.

Research has proven over and over that students learn better in a small group setting versus a whole group setting to meet their specific needs. The Hands On Equations classroom kit will be shared among the classrooms to give students a conceptual understanding of balancing equations, which has proven difficult when only given in an abstract presentation. Students will be able to manipulate the equations in a small group setting with the teacher or in a whole group setting.

As an icing on the cake, the tools provided in this project, give our students the opportunity to work with the teacher in order to build solid math skills, concepts and strategies. Our students deserve to have these experiences so they can succeed in mathematics now and in their futures giving them the best opportunity to bridge the 21st
