My Students

When fewer than 14% of students nationwide can identify the two oceans bordering the United States, we have a major challenge in our hands. How do we inspire students to see the world beyond the classroom walls in an exciting way? Through National Geography Awareness Week!

My students in our suburban Maryland school come from varied backgrounds.

Some come from upper middle class neighborhoods while others are new immigrants to this country with limited English skills. My school has the highest percentage of learning disabled students in our county, while at the same time, we also have students who are college bound. While my students have many options with regard to clubs, sports, and the arts, they have a limited grasp of the world at large: not only do they have minimal knowledge of where other countries are located, but they also lack sufficient awareness of global issues of other regions of the world. There are 2,300 students in my school. This project is designed to attract as many of them as possible during lunchtime to interact with geography activities. I also hope to invite parents and members of the community to participate, especially immigrant parents who also want to feel that they are also a part of the school community.

My Project

I hope that my project will get more students in my school interested in geography and in critical world issues such as maternal health in developing countries, food security, environmental degradation and other global concerns. By hosting a Geography Awareness Week in my high school in November, I plan to conduct a geography fair with quizzes, prizes and activities to challenge our students to be more globally aware citizens. During the summer, I had a chance to visit Argentina and to visit schools in various provinces. I would like my students, through their study of geography, to connect via Skype and other online technology with students in Argentina as part of my "Building Global Bridges" project. The maps, globes and even Upfront magazine could provide the first step in engaging students in understanding more the world in which they live in.

The National Council for Social Studies has identified "creating global citizens" as one of the most important missions facing social studies teachers.

Creating opportunities for students to interact with geographic tools such as maps and globes will enable them to experience the world a lot closer than through a textbook. As a geography teacher, I want my students to be well informed, dedicated and sensitive to global issues, in a world that is becoming increasingly interconnected.
