My students in our suburban Maryland school come from varied backgrounds. Some come from upper middle class neighborhoods while others are new immigrants to this country with limited English skills. My school has the highest percentage of learning disabled students in our county, while at the same time, we also have students who are college bound. While my students have many options with regard to clubs, sports, and the arts, they have a limited grasp of the world at large: not only do they have minimal knowledge of where other countries are located, but they also lack sufficient awareness of global issues of other regions of the world. There are 2,300 students in my school. This project is designed to attract as many of them as possible during lunchtime to interact with geography activities. I also hope to invite parents and members of the community to participate, especially immigrant parents who also want to feel that they are also a part of the school community.
