Building Foundations for Early Learning

My students need 14 books for social and emotional development that will promote a sense of well being, facilitating interactions with others and receptivity to learning.

My Students

My student D was on a preschool bus trip when a classmate got upset and started to cry. D went over, put her arm around the boy's shoulder and asked, "Are you O.K.?" Reading emotionally responsive books teach children to relate positively to others and to feel secure about themselves.

My students are four years old and growing up in a big urban neighborhood.

Our families are working hard to make ends meet. Our school is filled with caring adults who strive to give the children a stellar education. Our school budget has been cut so we often do not have the financial resources to purchase items we need. The parents of our students very often do not the extra money to buy educational materials for their children and this is why we try so hard to have them available at school.

My Project

In preschool, the children love to hear stories read to them. I am trying to add books to our classroom library that will help the children grow emotionally. Reading such books will give the children an opportunity to interact with one another and will not silence their emotional expression. After reading, we will discuss the story and the various issues that come up. Children should also be helped to recognize their own feelings and the feelings of others. One such book, "Nobunny's Perfect," can help children appreciate the effects of being selfish and stubborn. I am hoping to help my students understand how other people feel, say, when a toy is snatched by another child or someone is unkind. The books I have chosen will help in this endeavor of mine. Children need to know how their behavior affects others and why certain behaviors are hurtful or helpful. This is why it is important to read books about how people (or animals) in a story feel and why they feel that way.

Story books such as the one I am requesting, will help children see how someone's actions affect the attitudes and responses of other people.

The bunny in the story learns that by behaving differently he could have more fun with his friends. Reading certain books and having discussions in the classroom will give children models of altruism, compassion and positive social relationships. Please help us in our endeavor to help children become good citizens with solid emotional health.
