Building Foundational Math Skills

My students need interactive math materials (counters, dice, match-ups...) to make learning foundation skills engaging and fun!

My Students

Teaching young children my goal is to facilitate learning opportunities that are engaging, fun and meaningful. To me this means moving away from relying on worksheets to do the heavy lifting. This project provides an opportunity to make this happen.

In my class of twenty-five 5 year olds there are six different languages.

The majority of my students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. One common link among my students is their complete excitement for learning, especially when the learning involves hands-on experiences.

My Project

The materials I have selected will be used to support all of the foundational math skills that Kindergartners are expected to learn through the year. The dinosaur counters, vehicle counters and bug counters can all be used to learn about patterns, sorting and basic addition and subtraction. Geoboards will be great when we study shapes. Students will be able to manipulate the rubber bands to learn about sides and corners. Peg number boards will be a great way for students to practice learning number values. The activities and games will enhance my classroom's math program by providing needed opportunities to manipulate, count, stack, compare, sort,rough fun, concrete, team and partner open-ended activities. Each resource has been selected to best meet the cognitive, social-emotional, and fine motor needs of my students.

This project has the capacity to both improve my students classroom learning and provide opportunities for exploring math in ways that they have yet to experience.

The resources requested will provide concrete and real learning to support the development of foundational math concepts that they will need to thrive throughout their academic careers. There is no better way to learn in Kindergarten then through fun and meaningful activities.
