Building for STEM

My students need building blocks and a Goobi construction set to help enhance their STEM skills.

My Students

Our students are energetic, active learners. They attend a Title I school and their parents often struggle to buy supplies, uniforms, and provide lunch. The parents do try their best to send their children to school every day so they can get a proper education, meals, and exercise and play in a safe environment. The students try hard at everything they do, from in the classroom to on the playground, because they like school and feel safe at school. The teachers try equally as hard because we know they are our future and need dedicated educators who care about their success and well-being.

My Project

My students are luckily enough to have playtime a few times a weeks. And on the day we don't have playtime, I incorporate playtime materials into their math centers to help enhance their STEM skills.

My students need building blocks similar to Legos so they can build during their independent math time.

The building blocks will help teach students learn concepts like shorter vs taller, longer vs shorter. It will help teach them problem solving skills.

The building blocks will also be used when the students first come to school. The door opens at 8:15 and we begin our day around 8:30. During this time, the students unpack, use the bathroom and finish eating breakfast. Anyone who finishes early, is allowed to play but we need materials that are easy and quick to clean up and that multiple students can use. The building blocks would be perfect for this time.

The Goobi sticks will be a brand new experience for the students. While most students are familiar with Legos and building blocks, I am sure most have never used Goobi sticks. The Goobi sticks will present new challenges and building experiences for the students that they have not experienced before. This will improve their problem solving and creativity.
