Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a diverse low income community of children with a high population of English Language Learners and students with special needs. Each year, I support between 25-30 students with specific learning disabilities including dyslexia at our school. My kiddos range from 2nd to 5th grade on my caseload with the need of intensive support in the area of reading intervention.

Many of my students are reading 2 to 3 years below their grade level and have serve auditory and phonological processing deficits that prevents them from reading fluently.

However, they come to my classroom every day with a positive attitudes and give it their best. I meet them halfway by giving them the best quality education I can in hopes for them to work around their disability and crack the reading code to become fluent readers.

My Project

When teaching reading, it is recommended to use research – based, multisensory, and systematic instruction. Students with reading deficits or specifically Dyslexia have difficulty identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words. Decodable books offer students with reading deficits books with words they can sound out once they have mastered letter-sound relationships. They have a strong phonics emphasis encouraging students to blend letter-sounds together enabling them to read unfamiliar words.

The requested selection of Hill decodable texts will help my students continue to build their fluency, comprehension, and gain confidence in reading.

I want to give them the abundant opportunities to practice and reinforcement for greater retention development in reading fluency and comprehension. They will use these readers daily at school and at home to develop fluency. Most importantly, these texts will allow my beginner readers to build confidence to explore complex text.
