Building Fitness and Friendships Through Special Olympics Flag Football

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
All of the items I am requesting will make a difference in my SO athletes' training, practicing and learning to master the skills necessary to compete in tournaments across the state through Special Olympics Florida. Some equipment (mouthguards, playbook wristbands, and receiver football gloves) is specific to Flag Football, however, other items (agility ladder, jump rope) can be used in other Special Olympics sports (Basketball, Soccer, Track & Field, Bowling and Tennis) to train my athletes. There are a few items requested that can be used across sports, such as the mesh ball bags and athletic tape.
The goal for this project is to provide my Special Olympic athletes with the same opportunities to safely compete in sports as their non-disabled peers, which means their uniforms, equipment, and sports gear is authentic, giving them the confidence and respect they deserve.
Last year, at Immokalee High School (IHS), our disabled athletes competed in SOFL Flag Football, Basketball and Track & Field. Due to the popularity, demand, excitement and success of our SOFL teams, this year we are expanding our program to include Bowling, Soccer and Tennis. We have over 60 athletes competing in SOFL, practicing on a regular basis, traveling to statewide competitions, and earning trophies/awards for their athletic accomplishments.
My students are special because these athletes with intellectual disabilities are committed to developing their physical fitness by competing in Special Olympics Sports, demonstrating courage, experiencing joy and proudly representing their school, families and community. They all embody the Special Olympics motto: "Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."
