I want my kids to love learning and to take charge of their own learning. The biggest challenge I face is to engage my students, due to the lack of hardware in my (not so) 21st century classroom.
My students are beginning to learn about and experience reading and math in their everyday lives.
They need opportunities to experience reading and math practice delivered in different ways. My students come from many diversified backgrounds. I have a student from China who is new to our country and a critical beginner in English Language. We have special needs students as well as students who are above, at, and below grade level. We have lower income students who will benefit greatly from added classroom support in reading and math enrichment at home.
I have selected the Dreambox digital courseware for math practice and enrichment as well as Speakaboos for reading practice and enrichment for all my students. Dreambox was used at our school last year in 4th grade. We heard many positive comments from parents, students and staff about the support that Dreambox added to all students' math knowledge. I am also excited to bring Speakaboos digital courseware to kindergarten to support and enhance their reading skills.
Our school supports lower income, EL and special needs students. A diverse population is challenging to serve. Any opportunity I have to individualize instruction is a great benefit to my students. My students will benefit from diverse academic support as they continue on through school.
My Project
Imagine not knowing what words are being read when you hear a story? Imagine not having any books or space in your home to have books? Now, think about being able to pick up a device and open up a favorite story and see the words light up as it is read to you, or as you read it aloud! Think about how exciting it will be for students to choose from over 200 stories and interact with those stories over and over again in their own home or at school. By using the Speakaboos program, our students will have an opportunity to engage in the reading experience on a very personal level. It will even help our EL kiddos learn to speak English! The opportunities are endless.
Dreambox will give our students an opportunity to interact with math concepts at a whole new level. In this day and age students must have digital interaction to stay engaged and up to date with the times. Dreambox will allow me to offer individualized instruction to increase math skills.
When I see the 'excitement' of my students who received a computer game or a some sort of digital devise for Christmas, I realize how important it is to have the same sort of interaction in my classroom.
My students will be able to bridge their learning by using the same interactive programs at home, increasing their learning by leaps and bounds. Students become life long learners when excited and engaged.
