Building Fine Motor Skills with Busy Hands

My Project

First grade is such an important time where students are learning to read and write. Due to the pandemic and an increased amount of time spent on screens, many students are coming to school lacking developed fine motor skills. Without the muscles and endurance to write, reading becomes more challenging. Students need to be able to write, draw and sketch in order to practice writing phonetically. writing phonetically and forming the shapes of letters it part of the process of learning to read.

I am looking to build these essential fine motor skills through art projects and explorations.

These tools and supplies will be fun and engaging ways to build the muscles in their hands while allowing them to fine tune these movements. We wills tarts by coloring and building their endurance for grasping chunky crayons and colored pencils. We will then move onto weaving on the cardboard looms with year.

The beads will be another fun way to enhance their hand movements and muscle control- all essential for writing.

The coloring, weaving and beading will all be part of a fun arts unit that will have the added benefit of building the moto
