Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are outgoing and eager to learn new things every day. They love reading and enjoy special projects that help them reach beyond their goals. My students have an excitement for reading high-interest novels and require challenges to continue growing. They tend to struggle more in math and science.
We are a kindergarten to fifth grade, Title I elementary school with more than four hundred children.
All students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are a proactive school with several before and after-school tutoring and community outreach programs. Our students' families struggle financially, but everyone is dedicated to helping our parents provide for their children.
This is my tenth year teaching. The educators and support staff at our school are amazing in their dedication and determination to make a difference in the lives of our students. Our goal is to give each student the very best education and the best support possible at all times. We will not fail in our mission, and our students share our determination to succeed!
My Project
Our school has a Positive Behavior and Intervention Support (PBIS) Store that we call Dolphin Treasure Cove. The store is visited by every student once a week. Students are able to spend their Dolphin Dollars that they earn for citizenship in our school store.
Through the use of the school store, we are promoting financial literacy and goal setting.
We allow students to enter the store and determine which item they would like to save up for. Items are organized by price with the lowest priced items at the bottom of the shelves and increasing in price as they are placed on higher shelves. All items are marked from $1 - $25 Dolphin Dollars (not real currency). The requested items such as keychains, fidgets, STEM kits, and plush animals will help stock our store.
Students are allowed to visit the store one time per week and can only purchase one item per week. This also allows students to set priorities. We discuss the importance of setting goals and saving with the students as well.
