Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a trades-based alternative high school in an underperforming district. All students at my school qualify for the federal free lunch program, and the vast majority will be the first generation in their family to go to college. My state is consistently near or at the bottom as far as school funding & child welfare goes, a problem exacerbated by the rampant poverty prevalent in my area. Despite this, my students are incredibly driven and want to be successful, even though the deck of life is heavily stacked against them.
The students at my school are here because they want a quality high school education, but weren't getting one in a traditional school setting.
The school is incredibly hands-on, and focuses primarily on 5 trades: Auto tech, Auto collision, Construction, Welding & Greenhouse. While students are enrolled here, they can earn college credit which can transfer to the university or community college of their choice. However, their trade isn't the only thing students work on during the year - they are still required to take their core classes (English, Science, Math, Social Studies) so they can graduate on time or in some cases early.
My Project
BreakoutEDU is one of the best hands-on learning tools I've encountered so far in my educational career. It combines the fun of an escape room with the rigor of classroom learning, and it engages even the most difficult of students to reach. Students use teacher-created clues to solve puzzles and locks in order to open a special box.
Kids love BreakoutEDU activities, and learn a lot about teamwork and working together on top of the curriculum the box is set up for.
BreakoutEDU boxes can be modified for any activity and any subject, making them a versatile tool for teachers to have in their repertoire. They are perfect for our school, which has made a focused effort to provide kinesthetic activities through project-based learning.
I've used these boxes in a previous district with great success, and I know my students would eat these projects up if we could afford to purchase them. Purchasing a classroom set of 6 would allow my students to push each other to succeed by competing against each other. BreakoutEDU teaches collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and communication skills. These boxes can be used by teachers in every subject, and the online access is a treasure-trove of resources for instructors. I know what I'm asking for is no small chunk of change, but I truly believe donating to this cause is one of the best investments in education you could make. Thank you for your time and your donation!
