Building Engineers

My Students

Do you remember creating with basic wood blacks, legos, or even erector sets? My students would love the same opportunities to challenge their imaginations, develop mathematical skills and solve problems.

I teach in the most culturally diverse school in our public system.

My first graders range in ability and experiential backgrounds. Some students are refugees and speak little or no english. A majority of my students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Integrated in the classroom are special education students with varied challenges. Keeping all of these differences in mind, I also remember that all of my students want to learn, and enjoy hands-on, cooperative projects. Each student has something to offer to others.

My Project

With the use of building materials (and a shelf to store them on), my students will be able to create and problem solve. What is the tallest structure you can build with 20 blocks/magnets/logs? What kind of base does it need to support the structure? These are the kinds of questions my students will explore. In cooperative groups, my students will build problem solving skills, math skills, engineering skills, social skills and leadership skills.

Present-day mathematicians, engineers, construction workers and architects were once 6-7 year olds playing and working with building materials.

Their dreams and experiences when they were young motivated them to seek opportunities to use their skills and interests. Please help provide the materials needed to continue educating future dreamers!
