Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students LOVE science and math. The only thing they *might* love more is getting to play with LEGOs while in school. What better way to engage students in STEM learning than to bridge these loves?

Our school is located in an economically disadvantaged urban neighborhood with a high immigrant population.

The majority of my students are English Language Learners. Almost all qualify for free or reduced lunch. Despite facing many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They have a strong sense of classroom community and responsibility for each other. My students are a lively and enthusiastic bunch who love to read to each other, dance, and sing karaoke!

My Project

LEGO and science go together like peanut butter and jelly, they are the perfect match!

My students will use LEGOs throughout the school year to complete engaging STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) challenges, allowing them to acquire knowledge through active participation in their own learning experiences.

Students will use LEGOs, Building Bricks, LEGO Education Community Mini-figures, Windows, Doors, and Roof Tiles, Stackable Base Plates, and the Lego Tire, Wheel, and Long Axles set to explore math concepts such as 3D shapes, height, length, classification, fractions, and time.

They will build balloon-powered LEGO cars to explore air, LEGO zip lines to learn about gravity, and bridges to explore weight. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with sinking and floating by building boats, learn about mechanical engineering by creating catapults, and so much more!
