Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are truly unique 6th graders who enjoy questioning the status quo. They are highly interested in pursuing social justice, have a passion for debating, and love inquiry-based, hands on learning. This year we are developing our identities as activists, and are currently conducting action research projects on a variety of issues, ranging from LGBTQ+ rights to gun violence, to segregation in our city. They consistently add to our wonder wall, are wonderful caretakers of our classroom pet lizard, Skittles, and are careful stewards of our worm bin. They are expressive writers, empathetic community members, and creative artists as well.

My Project

My students are gearing up for the action research projects that they will pursue through the winter and spring! Currently they are researching a variety of different local, national, and global issues that they may want to take action on, including LGBTQ+ Rights and segregation in Chicago. As a whole class, we plan to carry out an environmental justice action project as well in the spring.

As we develop our activist identities, one of the biggest goals we have is to develop empathy for others.

Without empathy, we would have little drive to become upstanders and changemakers! This is why I want to delve into texts that support the growth of an activist identity. Books can provide us with "windows and mirrors," giving us the chance to understand and appreciate those who are different than us, as well as a more fully developed sense of self.

The book "Same Sun Here" by Silas House and Neela Vaswani is a perfect example of just this. This is a story in two voices, one character an immigrant youth from India, and another a young person from coal mining country in Kentucky. Through their letters to each other, they build a meaningful friendship, inspiring bravery and environmental activism in one another, while breaking down stereotypes and cultural misconceptions. I would like my students to be able to have a class set of this book so that each of my children can have the text in front of them as I read it aloud. We plan to also become pen pals with another group of students from somewhere outside our city, perhaps with our environmental activism project at the core of that pursuit!
