My Students

Our visual art classes prepare students for the 21st century by fostering skills in communication, collaboration, creativity, perseverance, and taking initiative. Our students are hardworking, motivated, and curious.

My classroom is typically buzzing with students working on projects, sharing ideas, trying out artistic techniques, exploring materials, researching, and receiving assistance from the teacher and classmates.

My classes are mix of grade levels, abilities, and interests. Some students have had rich experiences with art in middle school, while others have had limited involvement with ceramics and sculpture. My students represent a variety of socio-economic backgrounds, where everyone is invited to participate in the creative experience. I want my students to try new ideas, explore different perspectives, find their voice, and enjoy making art.

My Project

In 3-D Design classes, majority of projects use the additive process, where one adds materials to create the sculpture. This is often experienced in clay, papier-mache, and wire. Each step requires students to make a choice and then evaluate the results. The subtractive process in sculpture is different because one has to remove material from a solid form. As the oldest process in sculpture, the methods used in soap carvings mimic techniques similar to stone and wood carvings.

Creating sculpture using the subtractive process is a real challenge that requires students to use design thinking skills, such as visualizing forms, determining proportions needed to subtract, identifying solutions, evaluating their progress, and reflecting on feedback.

The subtractive process is not as forgiving as the additive method, because the material cannot grow back. To experience the subtractive process, students will create sculpture soap carvings. My district is using distance learning this school year, which means students will be creating this project at home. Carving requires practice, so students will need access to several bars of soap. Simple tools, such as plastic knives, are required for carving. This project helps students experience the process of carving without needing expensive supplies and tools, while working with a familiar medium.
