Building Culturally Competent Scholars!!

My students need these world flags so they can be exposed to the different cultures of their classmates and build their cultural competency skills.

My Students

Everyday, I teach 90 scholars who are motivated to be the best mathematicians that they can be. As a teacher, it is sometimes difficult to think of new and refreshing ways to teach the same math skills and concepts. I want my scholars to discover how math connects to their real-life experiences.

The scholars we have at our school come from all different parts of the city.

Like many schools in the city, we host a group of scholars who are resilient, determined, and motivated to excel academically in spite of their personal challenges. In many ways, our school is like one big family. Our teachers maintain close relationships with the families of our scholars and our scholars trust in us to provide them the tools they need to be productive citizens in their respective communities. As you can see from the picture, my scholars have the ability to work hard and create anything if given the necessary resources and tools. At our school, my scholars actively participate in debate club tournaments, athletics, and the arts. Considering the limited amount of resources we have school-wide, I am fortunate that our scholars still maintain the desire to achieve academically.

My Project

My school consists of a culturally diverse student body that spans five continents and about 30 nations throughout the world. This year, the teaching staff at our school has committed themselves to celebrating the cultural diversity of our students. In an effort to do this, we have decided to adorn the hallways of our building with world flags that represent the specific nations our students' families come from.

The flags will be used to promote our schoolwide initiative, "What Does Your Culture Mean To You?" Throughout the school year, we have been asking students to provide personal testimonies of what makes their cultural heritage important to them.

Our hope, as a school community, is that the exposure of world flags and the testimonies will allow students to learn more about each other's cultures and build their cultural competency. Through this initiative, the hope is that students develop a better sense of how they identify themselves culturally.
