Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My highly at risk high school students have academic needs due to their specific learning and/or emotional disabilities. They are intelligent, lively critical thinkers who take pride in creating projects for their Language Arts class. We need a laminating machine to preserve their masterpieces.
My students have been faced with many challenges throughout their lives.
They live in a court appointed, residential placement adjacent to our school. The majority of my students have learning disabilities related to reading and written expression. I also provide service for students with other health impairments including attention deficit hyperactive disorders. They come from a background of gang violence, substance abuse and poverty. However, they have dreams of turning their lives around, completing high school, attending college or a vocational training school in the future.
My Project
With the laminator and laminating pouches, my students will be able to write poetry and create projects based on their life's experiences and dreams for their future. We will be able to turn their projects into works of art that will be displayed for others to admire and enjoy.
It is important to me to be able to provide experiences that will motivate my students to read and write.
I have found that poetry is a powerful tool for written expression. Recognition from others also plays a vital role in boosting my students' self esteem. By laminating my student's projects and displaying their works of art, the power of their words and creativity will be recognized by their peers and our school community.
