Building Creativity and Classroom Connections

Help me give my students creative play materials including GeoStix, Squigz, Straw Builders, stencils, magnetic blocks, and letter beads to inspire creative play and building connections.

My Students

Many of my students come to school from diverse backgrounds and have special needs. They love new materials and exploring the world around them. Most of my students are English Language learners and come from low-income families. These families have limited access to materials in print at home.

In our township, 78% of our students receive free or reduced lunches.

I am a special education teacher in an urban preschool and I co-teach with a teacher who specializes in students who are learning English.

My Project

The materials from this project will provide students with a "soft start" to their school day. As they enter and eat breakfast, they will engage in open-ended exploration of the building and fine motor materials, such as Geostix, letter beads, stencils, straw builders, encouraging both creativity and socialization. This gives them the important time they need to ready themselves for the school day - shifting gears from the challenges presented at home to the demands of the school day.

A soft start to our day allows time for students to explore their creativity, develop their fine motor skills, collaborate with their peers, and challenge their scientific thinking!

We have already begun our soft start with materials I have purchased on my own - and it has been the perfect opening activity for my eager and motivated learners! I can already see my students using the Magnetic Building blocks and straw builders to build houses, towers, and more. They can use the melty beads to create pictures and designs. The sky is the limit for their creativity and level of engagement!
