Building Connections With Bilingual Books

Help me give my students a bilingual book library to share with family!

My Project

One of my favorite things about being a Multilingual Learner Program Specialist is that I get to not only work with my students, but I often get to work with their families as well. I love building connections with all of them. Additionally, I love to help my students build connections within their family through reading at home.

Approximately 50% of my MLs use Spanish at home.

Many also have parents who are not proficient in English, making it difficult for them to assist with academic assignments. By building a bilingual book library in my classroom, I can foster a reading connection between these students and their families, regardless of their English proficiency. Reading with students in their home language and allowing the students to practice reading the same story in English, is a fun and engaging way for my MLs to develop their language skills, while also bond with family.

With the bilingual books, plastic bags for the books, and a rack for hanging the bags with books, I can begin this bilingual library. The plastic bags will protect the books as they travel to and from home with students, and it will allow the books to be used for many years to come. The rack will offer easy organization of the books available for checkout in the classroom. My students will love being able to choose books specifically to share with their families each week!
