it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our project seeks to teach students the essence of compassion by helping them see the world through the eyes of others and learn to alleviate suffering. To cultivate empathy, we will engage students in interactive lessons using resources. For example, students will read "A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story" to understand the struggles faced by individuals in regions with water scarcity. In discussion, they will feel a sense of community and open dialogue. The story will help them gain a new perspective on the global water crisis.
To translate empathy into action, students will engage in activities that address real-world needs.
After learning about the water crisis, they will participate in a project to create simple water filter systems. Using items such as Kleenex tissues, thermal laminators, and snacks like Kellogg's snacks, Goldfish crackers, and Cheddar cheese Puffs to sustain their energy, students will work collaboratively to design and assemble these filters. These activities will not only teach them practical skills but also instill a sense of responsibility and compassion. I will use sparkle smile stickers and Birthday rubber bracelets as rewards, reinforcing the positive impact of their actions. By the end of the project, students will have learned not only to understand the suffering of others but also to take meaningful steps to alleviate it.
I will measure the success of these materials through qualitative and quantitative methods. Pre- and post-project surveys assess students' attitudes towards compassion, tracking any positive changes in their perspectives. Additionally, students will complete reflective journals where they can express their thoughts and feelings about the stories and activities. Observations and discussions will further reveal how students are applying their new knowledge and skills in real-life situations, allowing us to gauge the overall effectiveness of the project in fostering global compassion.
