Building Community With 'Write me Back Journals'

My Project

I love building a strong classroom community. As a kindergarten teacher, one of my most important jobs is to help students and their families feel safe and welcome.

'Write me back' journals are an excellent way to help families feel connected to our classroom while simultaneously helping classmates feel connected to each other!

Each Friday, I give students a prompt and ask them to either draw or write in response to the prompt. With Kindergarten, it will start with something as simple as: what's your favorite food?" The journal goes home and I ask the parents to draw or write their response to the same question. Once the journals come back on Monday, I read each parents' response out loud to the kids.

Everyone LOVES this activity. Not only is it great for building community, it's an excellent gift for parents at the end of the year. They love to see all of the growth in one place!
