Help me give my students a collection of competitive and cooperative board games to continue encouraging them to put down their phones and build the social-emotional skills they'll need for the future!
Our high school serves approximately 2500 tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders. They are a very diverse population at 40% Hispanic, 15% Marshalese, 10% African American, and 35% Caucasian. Approximately 70% of those students receive a free lunch or reduced lunch rate. Last year, I started a board game club as an opportunity for the students to unplug and interact with one another, and it has become wildly popular.
The club has become so popular that our meetings/game days have begun to take over two separate classrooms and fill into the hallway.
Averaging 120-170 students on an average club day, we quickly run out of games to go around. Even so, the excitement for the opportunity to take a break from the typical school day and set down their phones to interact face to face has been something awesome to see.
My Project
Our students have loved the opportunity to get together and have a moment to play, an opportunity that seems to have disappeared in a high school setting.
Meeting the social-emotional needs of each student in the age of technology is becoming so important.
The relationship building between students and their teachers will be a considerable payoff that your donation can provide.
We selected the games by polling the students to see what they would be interested in. Each student submitted 2-3 games they would be interested in playing, and learning more about.
Many of the board games offer opportunities for both competitive and cooperative play (against each other, or as a team) and all are built heavily around interacting with one another.
