Building Collaboration and Mathematical Problem Solving

My Project

More and more studies show that vertical whiteboard workspaces enhance comprehension, problem-solving skills, and collaborative efforts amongst students.

The nature of a vertical whiteboard lends itself to increased processing, and taking risks while diminishing the fear of "messing up."

In this project, I'm trying to supply my classroom with a set of double-sided rolling whiteboards which will be used daily across multiple disciplines, but mostly in math. Students will be able to work together to solve a variety of mathematical problems and situations. Having their own group workspace will encourage students to work together as they write on the boards and share ideas on how to apply different strategies learned during math. As they listen to the ideas of their peers, it will enable students to find a voice and share their own thinking. This is great for those students that might otherwise be muted in a whole-group setting. Students will also share work and solutions written on the boards with classmates, which will encourage others to try new strategies when problem-solving.

So many students believe they're "just not good at math." I want to change that internal dialogue to show generations of students that everyone can excel and find joy and confidence in mathematical achievement.

These whiteboards will not only impact my current class, but they will also impact upcoming classes for years to come.
