My students are AMAZING! I teach 3rd and 4th grade math and science in Chicago, and my students are some of the most energetic and enthusiastic learners there are! We are really hard workers and dedicated to our learning. My students are from a neighborhood in Chicago where most are living in economically challenging situations, yet they strive to overcome these challenges by maintaining positive attitudes and seeking out opportunities for growth and self-improvement. We are a "Leader in Me" school, so all of my students understand that they have to give their very best every day and are leaders in their daily lives. Many of my students are also English language learners which can be a challenge, but they do not let this stop them from learning. Our school community and neighborhood are very supportive and nurturing and each member contributes to our learning in some way.
My students need character education books and activities, mailboxes, caddies, and borders to build a student centered classroom. They will use the mailboxes for storing work, assignments, portfolio entries and also complimentary notes to each other with daily SEL reflections. They will use caddies to begin sharing supplies to begin building a community of collaboration and working together. They will use the borders in student created interactive bulletin boards withing the math classroom where they display what they know and what they can do. They will use these materials to be able to build a community of learners using the growth mindset to support each other in learning.
